The History of England in Three Volumes, Vol. I., Part A.
From the Britons of Early Times to King John
David Hume's History of England, published between 1754 and 1761, was for a century the standard account of the English past. This first part of the opening volume begins with Hume's short autobiography, "My Own Life," and then runs from the Britons and the Roman conquest through the Saxon kingdoms, Alfred, the Danish kings and the Norman Conquest to the reigns of Henry II, Richard I and John. Hume writes as a philosopher as much as a chronicler, skeptical of legends and alert to manners, laws and religion, and an appendix surveys the feudal and Anglo-Norman system of government.
