An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding

by David Hume

About 3 h 35 min of reading25 chapters

An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, published in 1748, is David Hume's own shorter and clearer statement of the arguments he had made in the Treatise of Human Nature. In twelve sections he examines the origin of ideas, the association of ideas, the problem of induction, the idea of necessary connection, liberty and necessity, the reason of animals, miracles and the limits of what a philosophy of experience can say about God and the world. The famous sections on causation and miracles are here, and so is Hume's conclusion that any volume of divinity or school metaphysics containing neither abstract reasoning about quantity nor experimental reasoning about fact should be committed to the flames.
