The Golden Sayings of Epictetus is a selection from the Discourses and the Manual of the Stoic teacher Epictetus, a freed slave who taught at Nicopolis in the early second century, translated and arranged by Hastings Crossley and first published in 1903. Crossley gives the sayings as numbered passages without the lecture-room setting, so that the teaching stands alone: distinguish what is in your power from what is not, want only what happens, treat loss as return, remember that you are an actor in a play whose length another chooses. Epictetus speaks plainly, with examples from athletes, slaves, travelers and the emperor's court. The ancient Hymn of Cleanthes to Zeus is added at the end.
