A Selection from the Discourses of Epictetus with the Encheiridion

by Epictetus

Translated by George LongAbout 4 h 08 min of reading55 chapters

Epictetus was born a slave in Asia Minor, taught Stoic philosophy in Rome until Domitian expelled the philosophers, and then set up a school at Nicopolis in Greece, where his pupil Arrian wrote down his lectures. The Discourses that survive are informal talks with students about how to live: distinguish what is in your power from what is not, want only the first, and accept the second without complaint. The Encheiridion, or Handbook, is Arrian's short digest of the same teaching and has been carried in pockets ever since. This volume presents George Long's translation of a selection from the Discourses together with the complete Handbook. Marcus Aurelius was among its earliest admirers. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
