The Financier: A Novel
The Financier, published in 1912, is the first novel in Theodore Dreiser's Trilogy of Desire, based on the life of the American streetcar magnate Charles Tyson Yerkes. Frank Algernon Cowperwood grows up in Philadelphia in the years before the Civil War, learns from watching a lobster devour a squid that life belongs to the strong, and rises from a boy trader to a daring banker and speculator allied with the city's corrupt politicians. When the Chicago fire of 1871 sets off a financial panic, his schemes and his affair with the daughter of a powerful political boss bring him down. Dreiser's dense, documentary realism gives the story its force. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
