Sister Carrie, Theodore Dreiser's first novel, was published in 1900 and quietly suppressed by its own publisher. Carrie Meeber, eighteen, arrives in Chicago from a small Wisconsin town with four dollars and a yearning for fine clothes, and the city's shop windows, factories and boarding houses go to work on her. A traveling salesman named Drouet takes her up; the married saloon manager Hurstwood takes her away from him; and the second half follows the pair to New York, where Carrie's fortunes rise on the stage while Hurstwood's fall through the winter streets. Dreiser refuses to punish his heroine, which scandalized early readers, and his plain, accumulating detail set the pattern for American realism.
