A Romance

About 4 h 02 min of reading25 chapters

The Fifth Queen Crowned, published in 1908, closes Ford Madox Ford's trilogy about Katharine Howard, the fifth wife of Henry VIII. Katharine is now queen, Thomas Cromwell has fallen, and she sets herself to turning the king back toward Rome and the old learning. Her enemies, who have everything to lose from such a reversal, gather evidence about her past, and Henry's own weariness and suspicion do the rest. Ford writes the sixteenth century in a dense, visual prose, full of torchlight, tapestries and overheard conversation, and gives Katharine an intelligence and integrity the chronicles never allowed her. The novel can be read on its own, though it rewards readers of the two earlier books. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
