The Expositor's Bible: The Book of the Twelve Prophets, Vol. 1

by George Adam Smith

Commonly Called the Minor

About 8 h 47 min of reading86 chapters

This is the first volume of George Adam Smith's commentary on the Minor Prophets, written for the Expositor's Bible series and first published in 1896. After introductory chapters on the formation of the Book of the Twelve, the place of the prophet in early Israel, the eighth century and the pressure of Assyria, it turns to the prophets of that century, beginning with Amos, the herdsman of Tekoa, whose text Smith translates afresh and expounds section by section. He combines historical criticism with the eye of a preacher, treating the prophets as men speaking to a political situation. The volume covers Amos, Hosea and Micah. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
