This second volume of Elliott Coues's 1895 edition of the expeditions of Zebulon Montgomery Pike follows the army officer's journey of 1806 and 1807 into the Southwest. Pike travels up the Missouri and Osage Rivers, crosses Kansas to the Pawnee village on the Republican River, and pushes into Colorado, where he sights the mountain later named Pikes Peak and spends a hard winter near the headwaters of the Arkansas and Rio Grande before Spanish soldiers take him into custody in New Spain. Coues, a naturalist and editor of Lewis and Clark, reprints Pike's journal in full with extensive notes on routes and places, followed by Pike's dissertation on Louisiana, Wilkinson's report and official correspondence.
