The Expeditions of Zebulon Montgomery Pike, Volume 1 is the first part of the edition of Pike's journals prepared by the naturalist Elliott Coues in 1895, with a memoir of Pike and notes identifying every river, camp and tribe. This volume contains the journal of Pike's first expedition, in which the young army lieutenant left St. Louis in August 1805 with twenty men to find the source of the Mississippi, treat with the Sioux and Chippewa, and assert American authority over the British fur traders. He wintered in what is now Minnesota and reached Leech Lake, which he took for the source, before returning in the spring of 1806. His letters and speeches to the Indians are included.
