The Every-day Book and Table Book. v. 2 (of 3)
or Everlasting Calendar of Popular Amusements, Sports, Pastimes, Ceremonies, Manners, Customs and Events, Incident to Each of the Three Hundred and Sixty-five Days, in past and Present Times; Forming a Complete History of the Year, Month, and Seasons, and a Perpetual Key to the Almanac
The second volume of William Hone's Every-Day Book, covering the second year of its weekly publication in 1826 and 1827, returns to the calendar from January 1 and fills each date with fresh material: the saints of the day, the customs and sports of the season, chronology, anecdotes and antiquarian notes, now joined by a Naturalists' Calendar recording the flowers, birds and weather proper to each day. Wassailing, Hogmanay, Twelfth Night and Old Christmas Day fill the opening pages. Hone drew on correspondents all over Britain, on old chapbooks and on his own radical and humane curiosity, and Charles Lamb was among his contributors. The volume is a mine for anyone interested in the folk year of pre-industrial England. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
