or Everlasting Calendar of Popular Amusements, Sports, Pastimes, Ceremonies, Manners, Customs and Events, Incident to Each of the Three Hundred and Sixty-five Days, in past and Present Times; Forming a Complete History of the Year, Month, and Seasons, and a Perpetual Key to the Almanac

About 37 h 38 min of reading1423 chapters

William Hone's Every-Day Book, issued in weekly parts from 1825, is a calendar of the whole year, one day at a time. For each date Hone records the saints of the old and new calendars, the chronology of notable births and deaths, and above all the popular customs, sports, ceremonies and superstitions attached to the season, from Twelfth Night cakes and Plough Monday to St. Distaff's Day, with notes on weather and the natural year. Contributions from readers, extracts from old books and antiquarian digressions crowd the columns, and Hone's radical past shows in his sympathy for ordinary pleasures. Charles Lamb praised the work, and later folklorists have mined it ever since. This is the first of three volumes. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
