The Entailed Hat; Or, Patty Cannon's Times
The Entailed Hat, published in 1884, is a historical novel of the Delmarva peninsula of the 1820s. Meshach Milburn, a shrewd and solitary moneylender in the Maryland town of Princess Anne, wears an old steeple-crowned hat that his family has passed down as its only inheritance, and the hat marks him as an outsider among the proud gentry whose mortgages he holds. His marriage to the judge's daughter Vesta Custis starts the plot. Around it Townsend builds a documented picture of Patty Cannon's gang, who kidnapped free Black people and sold them south, and of the swamps and forges of the Eastern Shore. The author, a Civil War correspondent famous as "Gath," returns here to the country of his ancestors.
