Campaigns of a Non-Combatant, and His Romaunt Abroad During the War

by George Alfred Townsend

About 7 h 41 min of reading33 chapters

George Alfred Townsend was barely twenty when he became a newspaper correspondent in the Civil War, and Campaigns of a Non-Combatant, published in 1866, is his memoir of those years. He describes his first days with the Army of the Potomac, the march up the Peninsula toward Richmond in 1862, observation balloons, Seven Pines, Stuart's raid and the retreat of McClellan's army, then the campaign under General Pope and the aftermath of Cedar Mountain. A middle section recounts his stay in England, where he wrote about the war for London readers, and the book ends with his return for Five Forks and a ruined Richmond. Townsend writes vividly and with an eye for ordinary soldiers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
