About 10 h 24 min of reading9 chapters

John Fiske, the American popularizer of history and science, published The Discovery of America in 1892, the fourth centenary of Columbus's voyage. This first volume begins with a long chapter on ancient America, the Indian peoples, the mound builders, the Aztecs and the Incas, then turns to the pre-Columbian voyages of the Norsemen, the medieval knowledge of Cathay brought back by Marco Polo, and the Portuguese search for an eastern route to the Indies. The second half follows Columbus from his first plans to his voyages, and ends with the finding of strange coasts by Cabot, Vespucci and their successors. Fiske wrote for general readers, in long and lucid chapters. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
