The Critical Period of American History
The Critical Period of American History, published in 1888, is John Fiske's account of the six years between the peace with Britain in 1783 and the inauguration of the federal government in 1789. He shows the thirteen states quarreling over trade, currency and western lands under the weak Articles of Confederation, the unrest that culminated in Shays's Rebellion, and the meetings at Annapolis and Philadelphia where a stronger union was devised. The closing chapters follow the ratification debates state by state. Fiske was a popularizer rather than an archival historian, and later scholars have questioned how critical the period really was, but his clear narrative fixed the phrase in American usage.
