The Clansman, published in 1905, is Thomas Dixon Jr.'s novel of Reconstruction in South Carolina, written as openly racist propaganda that glorifies the Ku Klux Klan. Dixon portrays the Radical Republican leader Austin Stoneman, modeled on Thaddeus Stevens, and the freedpeople of the South through crude stereotypes, and presents the Klan, led by the young Confederate veteran Ben Cameron, as the savior of white civilization. The book is part of a trilogy on what Dixon called the race conflict, and it became the main source for D. W. Griffith's 1915 film The Birth of a Nation, whose stills illustrate this edition. It is read today as a document of white supremacist ideology and its influence on American culture. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
