The ceramic art of Great Britain from pre-historic times down to the present day, Volume 1 (of 2)
Llewellynn Jewitt, an English antiquary, engraver and collector, devoted many years to this history of the potteries of Great Britain. This first volume begins with the pottery of prehistoric, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and medieval times and then turns to the works themselves, place by place, describing the potteries of London, among them Fulham, Lambeth, Vauxhall, Mortlake and Bow, and continuing to those of other districts. For each works Jewitt gathers the history of its founders, its products and its marks, drawing on documents, family papers and his own collection, with many engravings of pieces. It remains a basic source for collectors and for the history of British manufacture. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
