Llewellynn Jewitt, an English antiquary, engraver and editor of The Reliquary, published The Ceramic Art of Great Britain in two volumes in 1878. The second volume continues his survey of the pottery and porcelain works of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, arranged by place. It begins in the North East, with the potteries of Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and the Tees, moves to Liverpool, Warrington and the other works of Lancashire, and goes on through many more centers. For each factory Jewitt records its history, owners, products and marks, often from documents and interviews, and illustrations show typical wares. It is a basic reference for collectors. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
