The Canterbury Puzzles, and Other Curious Problems
The Canterbury Puzzles, published in 1907, is the first book by Henry Ernest Dudeney, the English puzzle writer whose problems ran for decades in the Strand Magazine. The title sequence imagines Chaucer's pilgrims setting one another puzzles on the road, from the Reve's and the Pardoner's to the Haberdasher's problem of cutting an equilateral triangle into four pieces that make a square, a dissection Dudeney was the first to find. Further sets are framed as entertainments at Solvamhall Castle, among the merry monks of Riddlewell, at a Christmas party, and in the adventures of a Puzzle Club that solves mysteries by reasoning. In all 114 problems are posed, with full solutions at the back. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
