Henry Ernest Dudeney (1857–1930) was an English puzzle composer, generally considered the greatest inventor of mathematical and logical puzzles in the English-speaking world. The son of a Sussex schoolmaster, he worked as a clerk in the civil service and began contributing puzzles to newspapers and magazines under the name Sphinx in his twenties, later writing for the Strand Magazine for twenty years. He corresponded and briefly collaborated with the American puzzlist Sam Loyd before the two fell out over plagiarism. His collections include The Canterbury Puzzles, Amusements in Mathematics, and 536 Puzzles and Curious Problems, and his dissection of an equilateral triangle into a square remains famous.
