The Brothers Karamazov
Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov is a sensual, buffoonish landowner with three sons: the passionate soldier Dmitri, who competes with his father for the same woman; the cold intellectual Ivan; and the gentle novice Alyosha. A fourth, the servant Smerdyakov, may also be his. When the old man is murdered, the question of who did it opens onto larger ones about guilt, faith and whether anything is permitted if God does not exist. The novel contains Ivan's parable of the Grand Inquisitor, the death of the elder Zosima, and a trial that occupies its last book. Dostoyevsky finished it in 1880, a few months before his death. This edition presents the text in Constance Garnett's translation, through which most English readers first encountered it. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
