Stavrogin's Confession and The Plan of The Life of a Great Sinner
With Introductory and Explanatory Notes
In 1922 the Hogarth Press published this translation by S. S. Koteliansky and Virginia Woolf of two documents that had just emerged from Dostoyevsky's papers in Soviet Russia. The first is the chapter of The Possessed that his publisher refused to print, in which Nikolay Stavrogin visits the monk Tikhon and hands him a written confession of the crime against a child that lies behind the novel. The second is Dostoyevsky's working plan for a vast novel never written, The Life of a Great Sinner, from which The Brothers Karamazov and other late works grew. Introductory notes by the Russian editors explain the manuscripts and their history. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
