Superstitions of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland was compiled by John Gregorson Campbell, minister of Tiree, from the oral traditions of his Gaelic-speaking parishioners and other informants over several decades, and published in 1900, after his death. It describes the fairies, their hills, their changelings and their dealings with men, the brownies and the water-horse, the mermaid and the blue men of the Minch, the spirits of the sea and the mountains, second sight and the evil eye, witches and their charms, omens and the lore of particular days, animals and plants. Campbell gives the Gaelic terms and verses throughout, and he records rather than explains, which is what makes the collection valuable. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
