Studies on Homer and the Homeric Age, Vol. 2 of 3
Olympus; or, the Religion of the Homeric Age
W. E. Gladstone, the Liberal statesman and four times prime minister, was also a devoted student of Homer, and he published Studies on Homer and the Homeric Age in three volumes in 1858. This second volume, subtitled Olympus, or the Religion of the Homeric Age, examines the gods of the Iliad and Odyssey. Gladstone distinguishes a traditional element, which he believed preserved traces of an early divine revelation, from an element invented by the Greeks, and examines Jupiter, Juno, Neptune, Venus and the other Olympians one by one, then the morals of the Homeric age, the position of women and the relation between the poems and the early books of Scripture.
