Studies on Homer and the Homeric Age, Vol. 1 of 3

by W. E. Gladstone

I. Prolegomena II. Achæis; or, the Ethnology of the Greek Races

About 11 h 28 min of reading37 chapters

W. E. Gladstone, the Liberal statesman and four times prime minister, was also a devoted student of Homer, and he published Studies on Homer and the Homeric Age in three volumes in 1858. This first volume contains his Prolegomena, which discuss the Homeric question, the place of Homer in classical education, the poet's historical aims, his probable date and the reliability of the text, and then Achaeis, a long study of the ethnology of the Greek races, in which Gladstone tries to distinguish the peoples of the poems, Pelasgians, Achaeans, Danaans and others, and their origins. Learned, ingenious and sometimes speculative, it shows Homer's hold on the Victorian mind. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
