Six Centuries of English Poetry: Tennyson to Chaucer

by James Baldwin

About 5 h 06 min of reading225 chapters

James Baldwin, an American educator and author of many school books, compiled this anthology in 1892 for teachers and students. It works backward through six centuries of English poetry, from the nineteenth century to the fourteenth, with typical selections from the major poets and notes to explain allusions and difficult words. The nineteenth century is represented by Tennyson's The Lady of Shalott, Coleridge's Christabel, Shelley's To a Skylark and Keats's Ode to a Nightingale, the eighteenth by Burns, Gray and Pope, and the seventeenth by Dryden and Milton, before the anthology reaches Spenser, Wyatt, Skelton and the Prologue to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
