Old Greek Stories
Old Greek Stories, published in 1895, is a retelling of Greek myths for young children by James Baldwin, the Indiana schoolmaster and textbook editor whose Fifty Famous Stories Retold was read in classrooms for decades. In short, plain chapters it tells of the golden age, Prometheus and the gift of fire, the flood, Io, Arachne the wonderful weaver, Apollo the lord of the silver bow, Admetus and Alcestis, Cadmus and Europa, Perseus and the head of Medusa, Atalanta, Daedalus the wonderful artisan and Theseus and the cruel tribute to Crete. Baldwin explains in a preface that he has softened and simplified where the originals would not suit a child, and his versions are still in use. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
