Silas Marner
Silas Marner, published in 1861, is George Eliot's shortest novel, the one she thought of as a legend. Silas, a linen weaver, is falsely accused of theft by the narrow religious sect he belongs to and leaves his town for the Midland village of Raveloe, where he lives alone for fifteen years, loving nothing but the gold under his floor. The gold is stolen; and soon after, on a winter night, a golden-haired child wanders into his cottage from the snow where her mother has died. Silas raises Eppie as his own, and through her the village takes him in. The child's father, the squire's son Godfrey Cass, has his own reckoning to make. Eliot treats the story with humor and moral exactness. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
