Daniel Deronda
Daniel Deronda, published in 1876, is George Eliot's last novel and the only one set in her own time. It opens at a roulette table in a German spa, where the beautiful and willful Gwendolen Harleth is watched by a stranger, Daniel Deronda. Gwendolen's marriage to the cold Henleigh Grandcourt, made for money, becomes a trap; Deronda, raised as an English gentleman without knowing his parentage, rescues the Jewish singer Mirah Lapidoth and is drawn through her brother Mordecai toward a destiny he never imagined. The two stories run side by side in eight books, and Eliot's sympathetic treatment of Jewish life and national hope was unusual in Victorian fiction.
