Seekers after God

by F. W. Farrar

About 5 h 45 min of reading28 chapters

Seekers after God, first published in 1868, is F. W. Farrar's study of three pagan moralists of the Roman Empire whose thought he believed came near to Christian teaching. The longest section follows Seneca from his family and education through the corrupt politics of Rome under Tiberius, Caligula and Claudius, his exile, his recall as tutor to Nero, his compromises at court and his enforced suicide, and it examines the old legend of a correspondence with St. Paul. Shorter parts treat Epictetus, the lame slave who became a Stoic teacher, and the emperor Marcus Aurelius and his Meditations. Farrar writes for general readers with warmth and with a clergyman's moral emphasis. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
