Records of Captain Clapperton's last expedition to Africa, Vol. 2 (of 2)

by Richard Lander

About 3 h 31 min of reading27 chapters

Richard Lander, the Cornish servant of the explorer Hugh Clapperton, was the only European to survive the expedition that set out from the Bight of Benin in 1825 to reach the Niger and the Sultan of Sokoto. Clapperton died there in 1827, and this second volume takes up the story with Lander's observations on the peoples of the interior, their wars, food, dress and music, and then his own long journey back to the coast through Yoruba country, including an episode with a wealthy widow who wished to marry him. Published in 1830, the book is a vivid and sometimes credulous record by a self-educated man, and Lander went on to lead his own Niger expedition. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
