Richard Lander was a Cornish innkeeper's son who went to Africa in 1825 as the servant of Captain Hugh Clapperton on a government mission to open a route from the Bight of Benin to the Niger and the court of Sokoto. This first volume, published in 1830, follows the party inland from Badagry through Yoruba country and the Niger crossing to the Hausa cities, where the other Europeans died one after another and Clapperton himself succumbed at Sokoto in 1827 with Lander nursing him. It closes with chapters on the laws, government, amusements, music and slavery of the peoples they passed through, and opens with a sketch of Lander's own life. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
