Principles of Political Economy, Vol. 1
Principles of Political Economy is the first volume of the English translation, by John J. Lalor, of Wilhelm Roscher's Grundlagen der Nationalökonomie, made from the thirteenth German edition of 1877. Roscher, professor at Leipzig, founded the German historical school, which held that economic laws must be studied in the development of actual nations rather than deduced from abstract individuals, and his text is thick with examples from ancient and modern history. This volume opens with Roscher's prefaces and a preliminary essay on the historical method by the French economist Wolowski before the treatise itself begins, and the edition includes additional chapters Roscher wrote for American readers. It appeared in 1878. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
