Principles of Geology

by Sir Charles Lyell

or, The Modern Changes of the Earth and its Inhabitants Considered as Illustrative of Geology

About 28 h 37 min of reading73 chapters

Charles Lyell's Principles of Geology, first published in three volumes between 1830 and 1833 and revised many times, argued that the earth's surface had been shaped by the same causes still at work today, acting gradually over immense periods. This edition, a revised American printing of the 1850s, opens with a history of geology and the case for that principle, then examines the forces of change: rivers, tides and currents, the formation of deltas and reefs, volcanoes and earthquakes, with the columns of the Temple of Serapis near Naples as evidence of the land's slow rise and fall. The last part treats changes in the living world, the distribution and extinction of species. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
