A Manual of Elementary Geology

by Sir Charles Lyell

or, The Ancient Changes of the Earth and its Inhabitants as Illustrated by Geological Monuments

About 16 h 10 min of reading135 chapters

A Manual of Elementary Geology is Sir Charles Lyell's introduction to the science of the earth's crust, a companion to his Principles of Geology, which had argued that the earth's surface was shaped by the same slow causes still at work today. Here Lyell explains the different classes of rocks, how sediments are laid down, consolidated, raised and worn away, and how fossils allow geologists to place strata in chronological order. He then describes the formations of Europe and North America from the most recent deposits back through the Tertiary, Cretaceous and older periods to the Silurian, and finishes with volcanic and metamorphic rocks. Many woodcuts of fossils and sections illustrate the text. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
