Pictographs of the North American Indians. A preliminary paper
Fourth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1882-83, Government Printing Office, Washington, 1886, pages 3-256
Pictographs of the North American Indians is a study by Garrick Mallery, an army officer turned ethnologist, published in 1886 in the Fourth Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of Ethnology. Mallery defines a pictograph as writing by picture and surveys the rock carvings and paintings known across the United States, state by state, with comparisons from Central and South America and elsewhere. He then examines the tools, colors and materials used, from bone and bark to skins and the living tree, and the subjects shown, including the winter counts kept by Plains peoples to record each year. A closing section on errors and frauds and advice to collectors completes this illustrated report.
