Garrick Mallery (1831–1894) was an American soldier and ethnologist. Trained as a lawyer in Philadelphia, he served as an officer in the Union army during the Civil War, was wounded and captured, and stayed in the army afterward, serving at frontier posts where he became interested in the sign language and records of the Plains peoples. He joined John Wesley Powell's Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian and published pioneering studies of Native American sign language and pictography, including Pictographs of the North American Indians and the larger Picture-Writing of the American Indians.
