Oscar Wilde, His Life and Confessions. Volume 2 (of 2)
Oscar Wilde, His Life and Confessions, Volume 2 completes the biography Frank Harris privately printed in New York in 1916. This volume takes up the story at the trials of 1895 and follows Wilde through his two years of hard labor in Pentonville, Wandsworth and Reading, his release and his last years in France and Italy under the name Sebastian Melmoth, his renewed life with Lord Alfred Douglas, the writing of The Ballad of Reading Gaol, his poverty and his death in Paris in 1900. Harris, who had known Wilde well and had tried to get him to flee England before his arrest, writes from memory and conversation, and his book is vivid and not always reliable. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
