My Life and Loves, Vol. 1 (of 4)
My Life and Loves is the autobiography of Frank Harris, editor, adventurer and friend of Oscar Wilde, and this first volume, privately printed in 1922, covers his boyhood in Ireland and at an English school, his flight to America at fifteen, and his years as a bootblack, hotel clerk, cowboy and law student in New York, Chicago, Texas and Kansas. Harris wrote it to tell the truth about sex as well as about everything else, and the book was banned, seized and sold under the counter for decades. Readers have always doubted some of the adventures, but the energy of the telling and the portrait of the postwar American West are real enough.
