Old and New London, Volume I
A Narrative of Its History, Its People, and Its Places
Old and New London, published in six volumes from 1873 to 1878, is a vast illustrated history of the capital, and this first volume, by the journalist and poet Walter Thornbury, deals with the City of London. Beginning with Roman London and its walls, Thornbury moves street by street through the City, telling the history of Temple Bar, Fleet Street, the Temple, Ludgate Hill, St. Paul's, Cheapside, Guildhall, the Bank of England, the Royal Exchange and the churches, taverns and halls that filled the square mile. He mixes historical record with anecdote and gossip about the famous and infamous people who lived and worked there, and the hundreds of engravings make it a rich source for the London of the past.
