Walter Thornbury (1828–1876) was an English journalist, poet and writer on London. Born in London, he trained as a painter before turning to literature, and became a regular contributor to Charles Dickens's magazines Household Words and All the Year Round. He wrote a Life of J. M. W. Turner, Songs of the Cavaliers and Roundheads and several novels, but is best remembered for his books on the capital: Haunted London, a street-by-street gathering of anecdote and memory, and the first two volumes of Old and New London, which Edward Walford completed after Thornbury's early death.
