Memoirs of the Court and Cabinets of George the Third

by Richard Grenville, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos

From the Original Family Documents, Volume 2

About 10 h 12 min of reading18 chapters

The Duke of Buckingham and Chandos published these memoirs in 1853 from the papers of his family, the Grenvilles, who were at the center of British politics in the reign of George III. This volume, the second of the set, covers the years from 1788 to 1799, arranged year by year: the king's first episode of madness and the Regency crisis, the government of the younger Pitt, the French Revolution and the war with France, and the affairs of Ireland. Most of the text consists of private letters exchanged within the Grenville circle, including those of William Grenville, a leading minister under Pitt, linked by the editor's commentary. It offers a close, private view of how policy was made. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
