Man and Superman: A Comedy and a Philosophy
Man and Superman, published in 1903, is Bernard Shaw's comedy about the pursuit of John Tanner, a wealthy revolutionary talker, by Ann Whitefield, the young woman who has been made his ward and intends to marry him. Tanner flees to Spain by motorcar and is captured by brigands, and in the long third act, often performed separately as Don Juan in Hell, he dreams a debate among Don Juan, the Devil, the Statue and Doña Ana about the Life Force and the purpose of existence. The volume also contains Shaw's Epistle Dedicatory and The Revolutionist's Handbook, the pamphlet Tanner is supposed to have written. Comedy of manners and philosophical argument run side by side. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
