Back to Methuselah: A Metabiological Pentateuch
Back to Methuselah, published in 1921, is Bernard Shaw's cycle of five linked plays on human evolution, introduced by a long preface in which he attacks Darwinian natural selection and argues for creative evolution, the idea that life can will itself forward. The plays begin in the Garden of Eden with Adam, Eve and the Serpent, move to the years after the First World War, when two brothers propose that people must learn to live for three hundred years, and carry the idea into the distant future, ending "as far as thought can reach." Shaw treats the material with argument, comedy and satire of contemporary politics, and called the whole work his metabiological Pentateuch.
