Aurelia Delavie, the youngest of three sisters in a poor but well-born family, is summoned to the household of a great lady and finds herself the bride of a mysterious bridegroom who comes to her only in the dark. The sisters' meddling, a fatal spark and a long penance follow the old pattern, and Yonge's preface explains the fable's history from Apuleius to Beauty and the Beast.
