London Labour and the London Poor, Vol. 1
London Labour and the London Poor grew out of the letters Henry Mayhew wrote for the Morning Chronicle in 1849 and 1850 and was published in volumes from 1851. This first volume is devoted to the street-folk: the costermongers who sold fruit, fish and vegetables from barrows, and the sellers of everything else, from live birds and stationery to second-hand clothes, with their markets, earnings, slang, amusements, politics and religion. Mayhew let the people speak for themselves, transcribing long interviews with a watercress girl, a crossing-sweeper, a street Irishwoman and hundreds more, and he counted and tabulated wherever he could. The result is the fullest record of working-class London in the mid-Victorian decades. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
