Letters of John Keats to Fanny Brawne
Written in the years MDCCCXIX and MDCCCXX and now given from the original manuscripts
John Keats met Fanny Brawne in 1818, became engaged to her in secret, and wrote her the letters collected here in 1819 and 1820, as his health failed and he prepared to leave for Italy, where he died. They were first published in 1878, in this edition by Harry Buxton Forman, and caused a scandal at the time for the private passion they revealed. Written from the Isle of Wight, Winchester, Westminster, Wentworth Place in Hampstead and Kentish Town, they move between tenderness, playfulness, jealousy and despair, and show the poet's love becoming entangled with illness and his fear of death. An appendix includes Fanny Brawne's own later estimate of Keats. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first letters are free.
