Endymion: A Poetic Romance

by John Keats

About 2 h 04 min of reading6 chapters

John Keats published Endymion in 1818, when he was twenty-two, and it opens with the famous line "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever." In four books of rhymed couplets, it tells of the shepherd prince Endymion of Mount Latmos, who falls in love with a goddess glimpsed in a dream and wanders through earth, underworld, sea and sky in search of her, meeting lovers, gods and enchanted beings along the way. Keats's preface frankly admits the poem's immaturity, and hostile reviewers attacked it, yet its lush imagery and restless energy mark the growth of a major poet toward the odes he would write soon after. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
