The Letters of John Calvin were compiled by the French historian Jules Bonnet from the original manuscripts and edited with historical notes, and this second volume of the English edition was published in Philadelphia in 1858, translated from the Latin and French. It begins in 1545 and gathers Calvin's correspondence from Geneva with fellow reformers such as Guillaume Farel and Pierre Viret, with noble patrons such as Monsieur and Madame de Falais, with persecuted Protestants in France and Italy, and with many others. The letters show Calvin as pastor, organizer and controversialist, dealing with plague, quarrels in the city, the case of Servetus and the progress of reform across Europe. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first letters are free.
